Calypso Show

Thailand has more cabaret shows than you could shake a stick at; and if you haven’t ever seen one, it’s an experience well worth having and a story or two worth telling. Between Bangkok and Pattaya alone there are numerous shows nightly put on by wildly different companies, in wildly different venues.

Calypso Show

In Bangkok, the Calypso Cabaret is one of the biggest productions and most widely known. They moved recently to the Asiatique on the river, and that is a beautiful attraction in and of itself. An expansive and modern open-air marketplace, the Asiatique on the Riverfront is made up of four different districts, each with its own distinctive design and kind of goods.

The Calypso Cabaret theatre is in one of the first buildings on your right as you come through the main entrance. As you walk past that building you come into the area where there is more shopping and the walkway along the river. The earliest show starts at around 8 and last for an hour and fifteen minutes, so if you want to make the most out of the visit you should make sure to get there with plenty of time to explore some of the shops, restaurants, and views of the river there.

The show is an exciting, tongue and cheek cabaret with a distinctively vintage feel to it. It’s highly interactive, and can be hilarious if you’re laid back about that sort of thing. There is quite a bit of variety in the show as well. American, Thai, Japanese songs, lots of costumes and settings, even Elvis shows up.

Calypso Cabaret’s theatre is very new, and very nice. All the decor and seating arrangements are designed to match the show’s aesthetic, creating a very complete sort of immersion. The ticket price includes a free drink (gin and tonic, beer, or soft drinks) so you can start to relax right away and allow yourself to be transported to a very unique, and very strange alternate universe projection of a 1940s cabaret.

And so you can back your stories up with hard evidence when you get back home, the dancers are all more than eager to pose for photos. Some people get bent out of shape about this sort of thing, but working in entertainment is tough and 20 baht for a photo and a giggle is a small tip for even a starving writer to cough up.
