{"id":3958,"date":"2012-02-16T05:48:15","date_gmt":"2012-02-15T22:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/?p=3958"},"modified":"2020-07-26T22:32:18","modified_gmt":"2020-07-26T15:32:18","slug":"the-openness-of-thai-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/the-openness-of-thai-culture","title":{"rendered":"The Openness of Thai Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>There are so many reasons why people travel to Thailand, and many more reasons why they love it.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>But the one thing that really sets the country apart from other tourist destinations (because, let\u2019s be honest, there are a lot of countries with beautiful beaches and mountains) is the incomparably accepting nature of <a title=\"Thai Culture - Customs and Etiquette of Thailand\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/en\/practical-information\/thai-people-and-thai-culture-meeting-a-new-culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thai culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3960\" style=\"width: 437px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ruamrudee-bangkok.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3960\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3960 \" title=\"Ruamrudee, Bangkok\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ruamrudee-bangkok.jpg\" alt=\"Ruamrudee, Bangkok\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ruamrudee-bangkok.jpg 534w, https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/ruamrudee-bangkok-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Ruamrudee, Bangkok <br \/><\/strong><em>(photo by Benjamin Navor)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;Cast your burdens upon Me Those who are heavily laden, Come to Me, all of you who are tired Of carrying heavy loads, For the yoke I will give you is easy And My burden is light, Come to Me and I will give you rest.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The culture in Thailand is driven by an underlying desire to maintain the peace.\u00a0 If ever a people truly embodied the notion of taking the middle road, it would have to be the Thais.\u00a0 The underlying philosophy is that if a thing isn\u2019t directly bothering you, like a mosquito for instance, then there isn\u2019t any need to interfere with its course and you are better off letting it be.<\/p>\n<p>This aspect of <strong>Thai culture<\/strong> is evident in the numerous stray dogs that wander freely about the country.\u00a0 Most countries that are as developed as Thailand have people go around and collect stray dogs, put them in cages, remove them as a potential eyesore.\u00a0 Thai customs would dictate that it would be rude to hassle one of the poor beasts, unless he was threatening some livestock, or constantly stealing your sandals or something.<\/p>\n<p>But no clearer and broader reaching example of the openness and willingness to accept of <strong>Thai culture<\/strong> exists than the peace and harmony in which so many different faiths are able to coexist in one place.<\/p>\n<p>Many countries around the world could learn a few valuable lessons from the kingdom on this point.\u00a0 While in many places religions are locking horns and causing social problems and even violence, Thai people of many faiths are able to live and work happily together.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the capitol of Bangkok, churches and mosques are as common as Buddhist temples (Buddhism being the dominant spiritual system in the country).
