It was a show of two wheeled motorized transport through Thai history, with displays of mini-bikes, racing bikes, the still ubiquitous scooter, and of course a rock band and bikers in leather; if it hadn&#8217;t been for the bass player&#8217;s pleading thumps I might not have wandered over to take a closer look and would have drawn this <strong>shopping excursion in Bangkok<\/strong> to a punctual close. It wasn\u2019t until I got home, and in fact a few days had passed, that I wondered what it was all about. So I looked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hanuman_five_poster.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"419\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hanuman_five_poster.jpg\" alt=\"Hanuman Five Poster\" class=\"wp-image-7347\" title=\"Shopping in Bangkok with Hanuman and the Five Riders\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hanuman_five_poster.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hanuman_five_poster-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out the Masked Rider 6 is a 1974 Thai version of the tokusatsu superheroseries from Japan known as the \u201cKamen Rider\u201d by the Thai production company Chaiyo. Half of the footage came from the Masked Rider 5 or \u201cThe Five Riders vs. King Dark\u201d. The Thai version added the character <em>Hanuman<\/em>, the great white warrior monkey from the Indian epic the <em>Ramayana<\/em> \u2013 known as <em>Ramagayana<\/em> in Thailand. The Thai title translates directly to \u201cHanuman and five red ant men\u201d but the rest of the world, including the antmen\u2019s native Japan, knows it as \u201cHanuman and the Five Riders\u201d. Hanuman turns up a lot in Thai pop culture, if any readers are interested I may explore this theme a bit more in the future&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hanuman-and-the-five-riders.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hanuman-and-the-five-riders.jpg\" alt=\"Hanuman and the Five Riders\" class=\"wp-image-7350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hanuman-and-the-five-riders.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hanuman-and-the-five-riders-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bangkokbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hanuman-and-the-five-riders-1024x581.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>I really can&#8217;t wait to watch the film and figure out what&#8217;s up with the squid blimp.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But seriously, supernatural antmen motorcycle heroes aside, it was a cool show and another brilliant <strong>Bangkok shopping<\/strong> experience.
