Sunrise at Mogoju Peak

I have heard plenty of people’s sentiments about the sunset. They say it is romantic. They say that couples would watch it together, hold hands and promise love to one another. I have seen the sunset quite a few times but it has failed to put a spell one me the same way as it has done to others.

No, it is not the sunset that mesmerizes me but the sunrise.

How could anyone not see the magnificence of the rising star that emits light to the whole world? Is it not grand to watch the beginning of the day with your own eyes? Is it not beauty to watch the darkness recede for the glorious morning?

My memory of the sunrise at Mogoju Peak is as breathtaking as bungee jumping from a cliff or diving into the deep sea. Overlooking the rest of Thailand, it was as if I was sharing a secret with the sunrise. Together, we peeked into the world while people slept and ignored the hovering light that would soon awaken them.

Is it then, the light that has me spellbound? Yes and no. It is the journey to the peak, every fall and every scrape that it took to get there for a moment to greet the start of a new day. After facing the bitter wilderness for days, I finally stood and faced the rising sun, the most immense ball of light. Seeing such beauty is a celebration of my feat for reaching the top and in the moment, it was bliss.

“A streaming golden light enters in and under the windowsill. A restless sleeper is awakened to new beginnings. To catch a sunrise the dream arises as the light bursts forth. The sunrise lights up the sky in anticipation of a world that has yet to be created.” (Sharon Esther Lampert)
