The significant damage this has done to the international reputation of Thailand as a tourist paradise was not enough to oust it out of the top spot. Bangkok was also voted as the world’s best city in 2008.

Considered one of the “hot spots” of travel in world, Bangkok has gained in popularity among tourists and travelers worldwide in recent years. The city is known for its fantastic tropical settings, historical sites, rich culture and wonderful architecture.

In addition, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok was voted number 1 in the Top City Hotel Awards. The Peninsula came in at number 4, and the Shangri-La number 19.

The only other city in Asia that ended in the top ten was Siem Reap in Cambodia. Siem Reap has become very popular among backpackers because of its vicinity to the renowned Angkor Wat temple.

Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2011 is available for digital download on iTunes and will hit newsstands on August 23rd.
