3 Things to Do in the Outskirts of Bangkok

Without a doubt, Bangkok never sleeps.  I have come to love its energy , intensity and madness through the years.

But, if you are looking for things to do and places without going really far from the downtown or the city center, we have a few places to visit in Bangkok where we can escape the chaos and find a little serenity.

Trying to find a quiet space to think is not always easy, especially in Bangkok there is blocked traffic, crowded sidewalks, street carts and smoggy air. But it is possible to escape the city’s madness with these places in the outskirts of Bangkok.

Enjoy the relaxing Gallery of Baan Silapin (Artist’s House) in Thonburi

The Artist’s House is situated along a canal on the Thonburi side of Bangkok. A difficult attraction to find and when you do, a great sense of fulfillment will surely come after. This kind of old Thai wooden house was very typical along the klongs in earlier times but today these are becoming rare. This house also has some unusual features that always catch the eyes of tourists passing by on speeding boats: Several human-sized statues painted in white, red or black sitting by the water, endlessly staring at life passing by. There’s a traditional puppet show every wednesday that everyone will love.

It has the feel of village life, teenagers hang by the canal, feeding hungry fishes with colorful food pellets sold in shops around while people sit by the river. Truly a unique experience to escape the crazy, busy traffic of Bangkok.

Take a boat trip in the floating market at Lat Mayom

This floating market is considered as one of the most authentic of Bangkok’s floating markets and is frequented visited mostly by the locals and Thai tourists where you could find amazing Thai food for incredibly cheap prices.

If you happen to arrive early in the morning for a peaceful walk around the markets that sit on the edge of the canal, you will find tranquility.

Then start getting on a long tail boat for a 20 min ride to a nearby traditional village that will reminds you of what might be the old Thai village life in the old days.

If you have more time, a few of the locals open their homes and gardens for you to wander and walk around. Beautiful pink lilies on their pads in garden ponds while listening to the birds and people-watch.

Biking in Bang Krachao

Bang Krachao, also known as the green lung of Bangkok, is an island located in the province of Phra Pradaeng. Found just outside of the city, the island lacks any urban development but equipped with a huge nature park, a floating market, few charming cafes small yet stunning temples and warm, friendly locals. This place is definitely  where visitors to the city can go and truly escape the bustle of the capital.
